Veneers and Your Dental Health: Understanding the Process

A dental veneer is a layer of porcelain or composite material that is attached to the outer surface of a tooth to correct an unsightly appearance, or protect a weakened tooth from further damage. Veneers can be placed over a single tooth or onto multiple teeth at the same time. Bright, healthy-looking veneers can quickly and easily transform your smile, and the entire procedure can be accomplished in only three visits to an affordable dentist. The steps for getting dental veneers placed are described below.

Your first appointment will consist of diagnosis, discussion, and treatment planning. It is your opportunity to discuss what you wish to achieve and review your options. Your dentist will examine your teeth to ensure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure. The process may involve impressions and X-rays of your teeth or mouth.

Preparing Your Teeth for Dental Veneers

The preparation for a veneer involves removing about one-half millimeter of your tooth’s enamel from its surface; this approximates the thickness of the veneer to be placed later. Next, a model or impression of your tooth is made and sent to a laboratory. Your new veneer will be crafted at the laboratory and sent back to your dentist in a couple of weeks. You may have the option of wearing a temporary veneer if your tooth’s appearance embarrasses you.

The Bonding Process for Veneers

Your dentist will temporarily place dental veneers to check for proper fit and color before permanently bonding them to your teeth. The veneer may be removed repeatedly to make adjustments until the fit and appearance is perfect. Your teeth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched to ensure a strong bond. Finally, veneers are fitted permanently using a special type of cement. A light beam is applied to activate chemicals in the cement that help them harden quickly. You’ll likely be given a follow-up appointment date, so your dentist can check the health of the gum tissues around your new veneers.
