If your self-confidence has suffered because of chipped, misaligned, or discolored teeth, the porcelain veneers procedure may be able to give you the smile that you’ve been dreaming of. Veneers can restore the appearance of teeth that are healthy but aesthetically unappealing. If you’d like to have a beautiful smile again, call our Goshen office to schedule an evaluation with one of our dentists and determine if veneers are right for you.

Are Porcelain Veneers a Good Option for Misaligned Teeth?

Veneers are comprised of several layers of very thin dental porcelain that function and look like your natural dental enamel. They adhere to the front surface of your teeth and can enhance the aesthetics of teeth that have superficial damage or defects, such as uneven spacing, discoloration or stains, or irregular length, particularly if it’s due to bruxism. Veneers are excellent for correcting aesthetic deficiencies in your teeth, such as:

  • Size and shape: If you feel that your teeth are not the right shape for your face, then veneers can change the appearance of your teeth to one that pleases you. If your teeth have been shortened because you grind your teeth at night, then veneers can help lengthen them. However, you’ll want to obtain a bruxism mouthguard from your dentist so that your bruxism doesn’t damage your veneers.
  • Tooth Color: If the aging process or lifestyle habits such as smoking or dietary habits such as drinking coffee, tea or red wine have left your teeth stained, discolored or dull, then veneers can restore the appearance of your teeth, and you can even lighten them. Veneers are available in many shades, so you can have the white, bright teeth you’ve always wanted.
  • Alignment and spacing: If you have minor gaps or misalignments in your teeth but don’t want to wear braces, then veneers can supply you with the straight, even appearance that you want.

During your consultation, your dentist will also review the porcelain veneers cost with you. Your porcelain veneers cost will depend on several factors and will be unique to you. The number of teeth involved, the brand of veneers porcelain that you select, any additional work that you may need, and your insurance cost will all affect the total for your veneers. We’ll provide you with an estimate prior to commencing any work so that you’ll know what to expect for your porcelain veneers cost, so call our office if you want to schedule a consultation.

Is There a Difference Between a Porcelain Crown and a Porcelain Veneer?

Although both are permanently installed dental devices and both are made of porcelain, porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers have two entirely different functions. Veneers are aesthetic enhancements only, they provide no structural support or strength to the teeth. They’re applied to the fronts of the teeth only and require removal of only 1mm or less of tooth enamel, whereas a crown covers the entire surface of the tooth and requires removal of a minimum of 2mm of tooth enamel. Crowns can cover significant damage to teeth whereas veneers can cover only minor flaws. Crowns are often referred to as caps because they cap the entire surface of the tooth.

Are Veneers Long-lasting?

Unless damaged from trauma, veneers can last for decades if they’re properly maintained. Like your natural teeth, porcelain teeth should have a regimen of regular flossing and brushing and periodic dental checkups. With this type of care regimen, your veneers can last for decades or even for the rest of your life. Be sure to use your teeth for their intended purpose, not for bottle or bag openers.

Are Lumineers® a Superior Type of Veneers?

Lumineers® is a brand of veneers that’s very popular because of their thinness and their very natural appearance. They’re also very durable and can last for decades. Although they may be more expensive initially than other brands of veneers, their longevity can make them more cost-effective over time and you won’t have the inconvenience of replacement.

What Maintenance Procedures Do Veneers Need?

Veneers require regular brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups. No special cleaners or regimens are necessary, simply a program of good oral hygiene. If you have bruxism, then wear a mouthguard, and be careful when biting into hard substances such as candy apples. Other than those two, your veneers will function just like your natural teeth.
